Program Presentation: "Bill Netherby, Search and Rescue Coordinator
for the Nevada County Sheriff's Office"
Program Speaker: Corporal Bill Netherby
Bill is the Search and Rescue coordinator for the Nevada County Sheriff's Office. Bill has been with the Sheriff's Office for over 15 yrs, 1 yr and 3 months of which he has been in Search and Rescue.

All SAR in Calif. is conducted under Sheriff's offices. Nevada County averages over 30 searches per year. Bill related several stories of recent searches, including the recent search this last winter for a lost snowshoer near Castle Peak. After 3 days the snowshoer was found OK by a helicopter. Aviation searches are provided by the CHP and the National Guard, while the Civil Air Patrol is sometimes used when its necessary to home in on an ELT. NC currently has approximately 120 volunteers and has the largest canine team in the state as well as a mountain bike team. They are always looking for more volunteers and provide free training.

Bill gave some tips regarding survival if you are lost or crash in a remote area. He also had a list of items he recommends to be carried at all times in remote areas: 2 qts. H2O/ person, signal, compass, whistle, topo map, note pad & pen for leaving notes if you have to move, knife, basic 1st aid kit, trail food(energy bars are good), large trash bag, emergency shelter, lighter & matches, trail flagging tape. If called out they can respond in 15-20 minutes and be almost anywhere in the county in one to two hours.

At this time Nevada County does not have a policy of billing victims for services. The Sheriff's Office depends to a large extent on fund raisers for supporting their volunteer program. They are having a fundraiser BBQ next month. It will be on Sept 18th from 3-7PM at the Nevada County Sportsmen Club. Tickets are $15 adults, $5 child (4-12), under 3 free. This is an excellent opportunity to support the people you will depend on if you ever have to be rescued (heaven forbid!). Of course no one ever plans on having to be rescued, I never did, but you can ask me abou it sometime!
Oshkosh Report
Three members were present to report on their experiences last week at Airventure: Patty Wagstaff, Jim Booth and Bruce McGrew. Patty was lucky enough to travel there in style, in a Lear Jet. Jim and Bruce went in style also- in Jim's T-6, flying 1st to Dubuque where they joined with others for a mass T-6 arrival at Oshkosh. Jim and Bruce each showed pictures, including some of "The great flood of '010" which apparently made camping a challenge and deterred attendance along with the economy. Attendance was reported down about 7%. A more comprehensive report was promised for next month.
2010 Young Eagles

On *August 07, 2010* at *9:00 AM*
Location: Alpine Aviation
This seminar is worth a Wings Program credit.
Note: The program is looking for sponsors and speakers as well as program suggestions.
Taxi clearances A new taxi clearance procedure is in effect. Airport Towers will no longer issue a clearance all the way to the takeoff RW if multiple RW crossing are involved along the taxi route. Instead it will be more like a progressive taxi clearance.
*When reading back a clearance, always be sure to include your call sign
(you knew that, right?).
*The phrase "position and hold" will no longer be used. The new phrase is
"line up and wait". The purpose of this is to make the US more in conformance with ICAO procedures.
EAA Legal EAA legal has sent a letter to Sac FSDO regarding their arbitrary banning
of stage 1 flights at Nevada County. So far there has been no response.
