Program Topic: "Clyde, Walter, Lloyd, Clarence & William"
Entrepreneurs who created the light airplane industry in the US |
Prog. Speaker: Marty Maisel, Aviation Historian, Auburn Chapter 526.
Marty is a retired aeronautical engineer who was a member of the
Army/NASA Project team that developed the XV-15 Tilt Rotor Research
Aircraft, the proof-of-concept aircraft that led to the V-22 Osprey.
Marty gave a presentation entitled "Clyde, Walter, Lloyd, Clarence and
William". His talk focused on the entrepreneurs who created the light
airplane industry in the US in the first half of the 20th century Early
Cessna, Beech, Stearman, Taylor and Piper aircraft were developed
without advanced technical expertise and during a period of economic
difficulty. This was a story about the people who fostered a world class
aviation industry. The presentation was very interesting and informative.
Marty is also in the process of building a plans-built Cavalier SA102.5,
an all-wood, low wing monoplane. He showed a couple of pictures of his
work in progress including the wing and fuselage. |

Ev reported that the wings and center section are almost done. The CX4
is a plans built, single place, LSA, utilizing a VW type engine. Their
project was started in Oct. 09 with an expected ECD sometime next year.
390 plans have been sold and about 16 to 20 planes are flying. This is a plans built

Harold reported that he has the tail section and one wing completed. The
airplane parts are prepunched at Vans and uses pulled rivets for
assembly. All of the prepunched holes line up perfectly. The plane comes
in 6 sub-kits; empennage, wing, fuselage, finish, avionics and power
plant. Harold estimates his ECD to be about Sep./Oct. 2010. |

Air Charts & TSA Rules at Air Carrier Airports |
| Air Charts are going to be very difficult to get starting in October as there will be no more county or Alpine Aviation chart sales. For example, the county or Alpine must sell 5,000 charts a year to qualify to sell charts. Gordon suggested members writing to the AOPA and EAA, asking them to challenge the National Aeronautical Charting Office (NACO) on this issue. He also mentioned that Jeppesen is coming out with VFR charts. BTW, to obtain Jeppesen charts, contact Jeppesen Customer Service, 1-800-621-5377 or www.jeppesen.com (based on info from the Jeppesen FAR/AIM Manual). Regarding TSA rules for private aircraft operating in and out of air carrier airports, Gordon stated that the TSA has backed down on their planned stringent rules, giving FBOs at these airports more latitude than earlier expected. For example, flying into Sacramento Capitol Airport is no different than in the past.
